All I knew I wanted in High School was to be in the Computer Science shop. At the time I simply wanted to be able to program video games at my own will, but now I know that Computer Science is a lot more than that, and I see it as a likely possibility for a life-long career. My experience in the Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School has left me with a much deeper understanding of Computer Science as a concept in the real world, and I feel that I am ready to use that knowledge.
Computer Science is a very wide subject and I’ve experienced various corners of it. Through my Freshmen year I learned the basics of programming, web design, and cyber security. I expanded upon these three concepts in my Sophomore year alongside learning to create Arduinos (raspberry pi circuit boards) and mobile applications. In my Junior year I went much more in-depth with the programming side of things, learning about game design, databases, and how exactly to make my creations more user friendly (primarily in web design) using WordPress. Now, in my Senior year I am learning more ways to apply and expand my knowledge, which I plan to continue outside of High School and into College.
Alongside my journey through Computer Science, I’ve also excelled greatly in the Academics half of my school. Out of my classes I find myself understanding math most clearly, and more than the average person, which would benefit me greatly in a field like Computer Science. Even disregarding Academics, I have obtained two medals for SkillsUSA and I am a member of the National Honors Society, participating commonly in community service events.
I’ve discovered that much of what I’ve learned stems from a lot of very similar concepts, and this is because Computer Science is typically based around how to use logic to solve problems. The way that logic is applied might be different depending on the area of this field, but the logic itself always remains the same. Computer Science is a field for logical people who want to use that system of logic to create a solution to a problem which is something I find myself particularly interested in.
My time here in the Old Colony Computer Science shop has prepared me for the real world in a wide variety of careers, but I want to continue finding opportunities in learning past a High School education. I hope to do this through college, real Computer Science work experience, and my own free time.
